またデジカメ不調です・・・この程度の気温でボイコットですか・・・ということで今日も写真なしでおおくりします。
今日はいよいよ米作りの第一歩。塩水選をしました。去年収穫した米の中から今年の種籾を取っていたのですが、それを選別する作業です。
種籾と一口に言いましても玉石混交でありまして、その中から活きのいいものだけを使いたいわけです。去年はこの段階で失敗しておりまして、劣弱なものが結構混じってしまったようです。おかげで苗の出来が悪く、当然そうなると最後まで尾を引くという結果に。
今年はそうならないように強力に選別をかけました。通常よりも比重を高くした塩水に籾を入れ、底に沈んでいるものだけを残します。その際中間に浮遊するものも当然出るわけですが、今年はそれすらも完全に排除するという徹底ぶりです。
例年よりもかなり手間はかかりましたが、これで優秀な種籾を選別できたことと期待してます。やはり何の生き物でもそうですが、次世代のためには優秀な遺伝子を残していかないと子孫の繁栄はありませんね。
そもそも自然状態であればこんなことしなくても、冬の間に弱いものは死んでいき、春には元気なものしか生き残っていないという状況が勝手に出来上がっているんですね。稲作という人工的なフィールドにはめ込むからこういう手間も生まれるわけですが、現段階での私の生き方においてはこれはこれで仕方のないところです。
さて、この次は種籾についている雑菌を酵母菌を駆使して食べつくしてもらうといういわば殺菌作業に移るわけですが、今日は時間切れで塩水選まで。今から一月半くらいの間はこの殺菌と平行して浸水期間に入ります。
発芽しやすいように充分に水を吸わせてやるわけですが、これを一月以上続けておりますと催芽も同時に出来るので早目から浸けておくわけです。一般的なやり方では2週間くらい水に浸けるとあとは電気を使って催芽をするのですが、私はこの装置を使うのが面倒なので浸水期間を延ばしているというわけです。
今年は早くに雪が溶けてくれたのでこんな時期から米作りを始動することができます。やはり毎年このときは期待感と不安が半々ではありますが、、気分は無性に浮かれてきますね。
